A Floral Designer Who Heightens the Drama of Nature

I met the floral designer Doan Ly at her studio, an industrial loft near the Brooklyn Navy Yard that she shares with the interior plant designer Lisa Muñoz. Stems littered the cement floor, and one of Ly’s assistants, Myke Marinkovich, was tidying up the work space with cheery efficiency. Ly showed me some garden roses, plucking them out of a water bucket and pinching their petals delicately between her fingers as she pointed out the complex, open structure that differentiates them from more tightly petaled varieties. “I love romantic flowers,” she said. “I love having the chance to be around a lush, really overgrown, gushy world.”
